Overview

Machame Route The Machame Route is one of the most popular and scenic ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. A 6-day itinerary is considered moderately challenging because it has a faster ascent profile, but it’s still very achievable if you’re reasonably fit and prepared.
Here’s how a typical 6-day Machame Route trekking schedule looks:

🗻DAY 1
Machame Gate → Machame Camp
Elevation: ~1,800m → 3,000m
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
You’ll register at the gate and start trekking through dense rainforest. Expect muddy trails and lush scenery.

🌿 DAY 2
Machame Camp → Shira Camp
Elevation: ~3,000m → 3,850m
Hiking time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
The forest thins out, replaced by open landscapes and giant heathers. Great views begin to open up.

🌄 DAY 3
Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp
Elevation: 3,850m → 4,600m → 3,900m
Hiking time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Semi-desert
This is an acclimatization day: you climb high (to Lava Tower) and then descend to sleep lower at Barranco Camp.

🧗 DAY 4
Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp
Elevation: ~3,900m → 4,600m
Hiking time: 7–9 hours
You’ll tackle the famous Barranco Wall (steep but not technical), then continue to Barafu, your base camp for the summit push.

🌌 Day 5:
Barafu Camp → Summit → Mweka Camp
Elevation: ~4,600m → 5,895m → 3,100m
Hiking time: 10–14 hours
A midnight start takes you to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, you descend all the way to Mweka Camp.

🌳 Day 6:
Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate
Elevation: ~3,100m → 1,640m
Hiking time: 3–5 hours
A gentle descent through rainforest back to the gate, where you receive your summit certificates.
